Is Dolby Atmos better than Dolby Digital?

Dolby Atmos delivers a more immersive and higher-quality audio experience than Dolby Digital. If you are looking for the best sound quality and a truly cinematic experience, Dolby Atmos could be the perfect choice for you. However, if your budget is limited or you primarily watch content that still uses Dolby Digital, your older device may still provide a good surround sound experience. Dolby Atmos can be considered a significant improvement over Dolby Digital.

We understand it like this (Dolby Atmos vs Dolby Digital) –

Immersion –

Dolby Atmos 3D places object-based sounds in specific locations, giving you a real-world sound experience and creating a more immersive experience. It transmits sounds freely in three-dimensional space, including overhead.
For example, you might hear rain falling directly on you or hear a helicopter flying overhead.
But
Dolby Digital is a channel-based audio technology designed for traditional surround sound setups. These sounds are assigned to specific channels (left, right, middle, back, etc.), giving you a surround sound experience, but not the same experience as true 3D audio.

Compression Type –

Dolby Atmos supports uncompressed audio formats and provides better audio quality than compressed formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Digital. This results in clear sound with a wide dynamic range.
But
To save bandwidth, Dolby Digital compresses audio, which can sometimes result in reduced audio quality and loss of audio detail.
This means, Dolby Digital is often used to deliver compressed audio, making it suitable for streaming, broadcast, and optical media such as DVDs.

Channel Support –

Dolby Atmos is highly scalable, supporting up to 34.1 channels (24.1.10 channels), including height channels for overhead sound, providing the potential for a truly expansive soundscape.
But
Dolby Digital has a limited number of channels, with the standard configuration limited to 5.1 or 7.1 channels. It also supports surround sound but, like Dolby Atmos, lacks height amplitude channels.

But do you know? that –

Material Availability –

Not all content is available in Dolby Atmos. Many streaming services and Blu-ray still use Dolby Digital, especially for older content.

Devices in the market –

To fully enjoy Dolby Atmos you need compatible hardware for both your audio source and playback system.

Some personal preferences –

Some users may prefer the more focused sound of Dolby Digital for certain types of content, such as dialogue-heavy films.

So if you are still using Dolby Digital or Digital Plus source devices that are not bad, do not waste your money on replacement, if you are buying new you can consider the latest technology.
